lightweight weaves are used, then there will be no dearth of light in the room and the opposite holds true for the heavier fabric curtains.
Determinants for sewing curtains
The normal width materials - 54inches or extra wide at 110 inches/118 inches- are
used for sewing curtains; the latter being for unlined sheer curtains as these are required to run sideways with the selvage at the top and bottom of the curtains, so they can be made without seams. Patterned fabrics need to be studied and sewn such that when
upright, the selvage is at the top and bottom, but for narrower patterned fabric, this will mean that the selvage will be sideways. The weight for curtain materials has a wide variety and each fabric has to be judged according to the use it is to serve. One way of
checking is to hold up one corner and see how it drapes on the bias; there being none is indicative of unworthiness as a curtain. Woven curtains should be held against the light at a window to check for warp distortions and if the fabric looks striped, then this
can be given the ditch too. For printed/woven patterns that are repeated, vertically or horizontally, the exact length and width of each repeat design is important for cohesiveness when sewing curtain as vertical alignment is necessary on adjacent panels in a
curtain and every curtain hem should start from the same place on every cut of the material. To ensure that distortion does not happen, do ensure before purchase that any patterned fabric matches well- check both selvages at the same point to make sure it matches
economically across the full width.
Guidelines for sewing curtains
The lining/interlining of a curtain is color maintenance and are a must, unless they are sheers, as it ensures longer life, and that the wrong side of a print is not visible from the
outside. Flannel, Cotton or poly blends with it, are durable, protecting from sun damage while insulating it. Making your own bias binding/piping and adding a touch of lace or fabric remnants from other furnishing in the room, can give the curtains emphasis and a personal touch.
