The term sheer refers to semi-transparent or flimsy cloth, usually a very thin knit used to make tights, stockings, lingerie, dancewear and of course who can deny the romance and dreamy nature of sheer curtains- like wisps of dreams out of midnight and
charm, swirling and dancing in a room. Sheer curtains have an elegance of their own, despite the insubstantial nature of their being and homeowners that are keen on adding a whimsical touch to their room can sew some- just for the sheer pleasure of it!

Guidelines for making sheer curtains

The foremost step is to pre-shrink the fabric in the manner it is to be cleaned later on (check the manufacturer's label for instructions) to judge its nature. If it frays badly, zigzag the raw edges so it doesn't unravel while pre-shrinking. Next, the fabric needs to be cut so all the lower edges are toward the same end of the fabric (spreading flannel fabric on the cutting board will help grab the curtain sheers and hold it in place) and if it frays further, apply some seam sealant to the cut edges. Cotton covered polyester thread should be used and a regular 11/12 machine needle for straight stitching the sheer curtain- 1.5 to 2mm width and use of a throat plate with a small hole will ensure that the fabric doesn't get pulled down into the machine.
First stitch a fabric scrap and then onto the curtain so the stitching doesn't pucker up at the edge and use very short stitches for beginning the seam, instead of back stitching; holding the fabric taut in front and behind the needle thereafter to prevent the same pinching up of fabric. A French or flat-felled seam adds stiffness to the material so straight stitch the seam and then serge/zigzag the raw edges together, ensuring its no wider than ¼ inches.
Footnotes for a great finish to sheer curtains
If you hold the sample of a test seam of the sample fabric up to the window to see how it looks with the light shining through it before you actually begin sewing the sheer curtain, you can decide if you need to make any adjustments and do so accordingly. To ensure that the sheers are none the worse for wear, allow the curtains to hang for a full day before hemming with a wide double hem to add weight to the curtains for a good drape.
